Dr. Lara is Professor of Medicine at the University of California Davis School of Medicine. He is also Associate Director for Translational Research and Co-Leader of the Cancer Therapeutics Program at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. His principal research interest is in the field of developmental therapeutics, particularly in thoracic and genitourinary malignancies. He has developed an international reputation in clinical-translational research and in this capacity has chaired or co-chaired dozens of cancer clinical trials ranging from phase I to III, many of which are focused on new agents for both small cell and non-small cell lung cancer.
He is currently receiving research funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Cancer Society (ACS), among others. He has authored or co-authored 199 peer-reviewed manuscripts, most notably on novel or emerging anti-neoplastic strategies, and has recently completed a clinical R01 grant focused on cancer biomarker development. He is currently Principal Investigator of a NIH-funded K12 Clinical Oncology Training Grant, PI of the N01 Early Therapeutics Award for phase II trials, and PI of the ACS Institutional Research Grant program.
